The Research Triangle

One of the most exciting components of Durham North Carolina is the city's inclusion in the Research Triangle (or just The Triangle) region of the state. This area is an economically stable and diverse part of the state, and is in fact one of the most viable economic regions in the whole country in these challenging times.

The name Research Triangle was at first only applied to the area because of the universities located in the different cities of the area. Durham includes two of these universities, North Carolina Central University and the most prestigious in the Triangle, Duke University. Most of the schools in this area focus on technology based research; they are the germination points which have led to innovations in the loop calibrator, on the Internet, and other high tech areas.

Because research is such a primary focus of these universities, they tend to attract some of the pioneer thinkers of each generation. The research money not only helps to fund additional projects which contribute to a wealth of high tech understanding for humanity as a whole, but also in employing students as they focus on their studies. It's not uncommon to see students with TREO leather pouches clipped onto their belts as they switch from studying to work a couple of times a day.

Once those students graduate, of course, they are ideal candidates for employment and executive recruitment services looking to build on a highly educated work force. For that reason, many high technology companies are also located within the Research Triangle region of North Carolina. These include IBM, American Airlines, Verizon, and even the Environmental Protection Agency.

The natural attraction that businesses have to the area, thanks to the high quality education, led the universities, businesses, and municipalities of the region to create the Research Triangle Park back in 1959. Today this park is a commercial mortgage lenders dream. It is situated on 7000 acres, and is the largest research park in the United States. 157 different organizations operate out of the Park, with over 130 of them focused on research and development. The success of these companies means that others are literally lined up to take advantage of all that the area has to offer.

With the firm foundation that the Research Triangle provides, it is no wonder why so many different people are interested in moving to Durham and the other cities in the area. The region is historically insulated from even large recessions, so even when commodity funds are shrinking, businesses in this North Carolina location continue to do well.

The Research Triangle and the stability it provides are very important factors to the city of Durham as a whole. An opportunity to create a well educated workforce combined with the market for that workforce makes the region a well integrated place to live.
