Education Alternatives in Durham, North Carolina

Duke University is a private coeducational research university. It is organized into two undergraduate and eight graduate schools, and Duke's student body consists of 6,197 undergraduates and 6,627 graduate and professional students. Duke offers 36 arts and sciences majors, five engineering majors, 46 additional majors, and 16 certificate programs.

North Carolina Central University had an enrollment of over 8,000 students in 2005. NCCU has several colleges and schools. They are the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Library & Information Sciences, School of Business, School of Law, School of Graduate Studies and the University College. In 2005, NCCU ranked third in North Carolina for accepting National Merit Scholars, and the NCCU School of Law was recently listed in the Princeton Review as one of America's Best Law Schools.

Durham Technical Community College is a public two-year accredited institution of higher education and technical training school. They serve over 21,000 students with credit, non-credit, adult, and continuing education offerings, and Durham Tech offers career programs leading to over 55 degrees, certificates, and diplomas and university transfer programs. In order to give students flexibility, DTCC has a large distance education program, offering numerous online courses and telecourses.


Durham Public Schools
There are currently 46 public schools in the Durham Public Schools system, consisting of 28 elementary (K-5), 8 middle (6-8), 1 secondary (6-12), 7 high (9-12), 1 alternative (6-12), and 1 hospital school. It is the 8th largest school system in the state. Durham Public Schools employs 4,600 people and had 31,130 students as of 2006.

Durham also is home to the state-run residential high school North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is a two-year, public residential high school which focuses on the intensive study of science, mathematics and technology. The school accepts rising juniors from across North Carolina and enrolls them through senior year, and applicants undergo a highly competitive review process prior to admission.
